A film released the year before, 2001: A Space Odyssey (1969), provides the archetypal threat in the computer HAL who goes crazy and wipes out all but one of the crew before it is lobotomized. Neo Victoria (Diamond Age) represent something of an allegorical echo of our understanding of our time. He also was probably aware of the problems of feedback, when minor sonic perturbations are amplified to where they overwhelm the music itself. Willow Wilson spun tales that begin as near-future dystopian science fiction, only to turn abruptly into fantastical tales of supernatural creatures.

He finds that most new writers fail to create a believable sense of place, which is paramount for science fiction or fantasy. If you have the time for a novel, you need to read this book. New Moon 1:27-28, May 1987. Their resources list is the most comprehensive I have ever seen. I liked the Red/Green/Blue Mars stuff an awful lot but have not run across anything else like it. In Stross’s novel, it refers to the accelerating rate at which humanity in general, and/or the novel’s characters, head towards the technological singularity.

The Puppies are complaining that recent Hugo winners have been too highbrow, and argue that winners such as Anne Leckie’s smart gender-deconstruction of space opera Ancillary Justice, or John Scalzi’s witty Star-Trek-inspired metafiction Redshirts are too experimental and literary. What many of these works captured was more the style than the substance of cyberpunk. A few other books that presage cyberpunk (but only in a supporting sense) are the Terminal Man (also made into a movie) by Crichton (chip implantation to control epilepsy) and the world computer concept - I think the first I read was in The Fall of Colossus by DF Jones (made into the Forbin Project) - the latter was before there was a WWW that allowed human interaction via the web, but it does involve a world-spanning web of information that allows for the two computers to achieve a programatic singularity (even if it wasn't call such at the time).

Pat Cadigan published the novels Mindplayers (1987) and Synners (1991), contemplating the future of the mind with a welcome dash of dark humor too often missing from her male colleagues’ work. Ford was an early pioneer his 1980 novel Web Of Angels. Of course, all fiction is speculative, and all history, too—endlessly subject to revision. The story revolves around a physical world drug, Snow Crash, with a virtual world counterpart. This technique is repeated time and again.
