You've tasted it before, probably many times: "in rock video, in the hacker underground, in the jarring street tech of hip-hop and scratch music, in the synthesizer rock of London and Tokyo". Alternate history asks, "What if a historic event had turned out differently?" Now, some night, you get maybe too artistic, you wind up in the clinic tanks, spare parts." "You're breaking my heart, Ratz." Since he was a child, Burns had a deep interest in the fantastic. Later, when I managed to read it all the way through, I got the feeling that I was more like the juvenile delinquents who got beat up by the Starship Troopers than I was like the Starship Troopers themselves.

They can be incredibly helpful for catharsis and therapeutic for getting pain and anger and fear out, especially when you feel trapped and scared by situations like I described above. There are also lots of them—very good ones—in forgotten magazines and fanzines, and in Nueva Dimensión if you wanted to start at the beginning. It was sufficient for many centuries, and still is the source of information we rely on the most, but it has certain hard-wired flaws: uncertain capacity, potential for loss or alteration while in storage, and problems of access.

Labels cannot defend their own integrity; but writers can, and good ones do. This story led to comic strips featuring Buck Rogers (1929), Brick Bradford (1933), and Flash Gordon (1934). To me, it starts with Gibson's Neuromancer trilogy, but the quintessential expression is George Alec Effinger's trilogy. The attention lavished upon King and Dick especially exemplifies why science fiction is pervasive and ever more rapidly gaining respect.

James Mowry becomes a government-trained wasp, dropped alone in disguise on an enemy planet during a fierce war with earth. Andrew Ross, for example, calls cyberpunk "survivalist," a "new dystopian realism" which presents a future "governed by the dark imagination of technological dystopias" (432-33); and Pam Rosenthal suggests that the future in cyberpunk is "our world, gotten worse, gotten more uncomfortable, inhospitable, dangerous, and thrilling" (85). I think people within the area of expertise (Asimov and Clarke as you said, for example) can have their imaginations captured as easily as those outside the area, but I think the amount of that expertise put into the story is a measure of the author’s judgement regardless. Thus, lots of people have probably at least heard of this book, even if they haven’t read it. Beginning in the early 1990s, some trends in fashion and music were also labeled as cyberpunk. It is followed by Sidney Perkowitz’s appreciation of Star Trek, the space-opera TV and movie franchise that has been visiting strange new worlds since 1966. While the idea of a World Wide Computer Linkup might seem passé as we approach 2019, it was still very much unusual in 1982 when Blade Runner was released. Cyberpunk literature, in general, deals with marginalized people in technologically advanced hierarchical societies.
